Improvisert kvinnelig form I

50X60 cm 2026 Jonas Sjøvaag

The interest, I think, lies in the fact that my palette-knife slabs, using vibrant reds like oxblood and crimson (and cut against a scraped white ground) are all very improvised in this painting. I'm allowing the form to grow from what in the beginning was almost a random application of paint, redoing and re-layering, and from that, a shape began to appear. I personally like the overall shape and the tracing and I think the colour scheme is a very good one; balanced and coherent, no overpainting and not too much work done on it.

There's a very clear plan in this one, painted relatively quickly with little time spent on doubt and consideration.

In the post-war gestural abstraction tradition.
Inspirations: Joan Mitchell & Per Kirkeby.
