Geometrisk studie I

After painting a lot of aerials, like Europa I and II, it felt natural to zoom in more, to tidy up, and play around with depth and rooms. I have also enjoyed drawing perspective cubes for a long time, doodling and noodling them up on napkins, paper, album artworks, and so on.

A main interest in this painting, apart from the geometry, are the colours; I wanted to keep them earthy and rustic, opposite of bright and attention-grabbing, while still allowing a focal point to be clearly visible and striking, almost, to lead the eye towards it. 

The result is a flattened cube of ochre and white that sits on scraped bands of olive and steel blue. The canvas weave is left visible through thin paint, something that often works well if the goal is to achieve a sense of perspective without resorting to painted lines and visuals that are more a illusion of physics (as opposed to this, which can be seen as tactile, even without touching).
