Tulipanen under magnoliatreet

80X100 cm 2024 Jonas Sjøvaag

This thick square of orange was placed to cover up an attempt at adding a surrealist element to this painting, but instead of adding a layer of thought it removed it and worked oppositely of my intention. Same with the yellow square.

However, these mishaps are not flaws, because these resulting solid-colour blocks adds a rigidity and clarity to the painting, allowing other parts to stay closer to the original strokes. The sky is a dry-brushed blue and scumbled green-gold ground, and I used my palette-knife to scrape ridges and expose the canvas weave which overall gives part of the painting a built, tactile surface. It also gives perspective; the layers where the weave is visible appears to be more distant, while the areas where the paint is thicker, and showing the stroke movements more clearly, appears to be closer. Perspective is present, both in the composition and visual elements, as well as in the technique applied to the image.

In the post-war abstraction tradition.
Inspirations: Richard Diebenkorn, Serge Poliakoff.
